The Hamilton Cricket Club was formed on May 10th, 1847 at Young's Hotel. In 1847 H.C.C had 30 members and a ground of 6 acres in the west end of the city near the present H.A.A.A ground. In The 1870's H.C.C toured the U.S.A and entertained teams from the United States and England. On September 18, 19 & 20, 1879, H.C.C hosted Dafts English Eleven and it was mentioned that the game was played on the Duke St. ground. It is assumed that they had moved from their earlier ground to the present H.A.A.A ground. This location was used until about 1922 when the ground was moved to Gage Park.
In 1948 the venue of the game was changed to Churchill Park where the ground is at present located. Since the second world war, H.C.C has hosted representative teams from Bermuda, Australia, West Indies, Ireland, New Zealand, England(twice), Barbados, Trinidad, Grenada and many teams from the U.S.A and Canada. In 1921 the Hamilton District Cricket League was formed and H.C.C joined this league and still plays a full schedule of games at Churchill Park. By 1967 the club membership had grown to the point that two teams were entered in league and a junior program started. The junior program is still being run and has produced many outstanding cricketers. |
